Hi there! I’m Brandy Foster, Android developer at Detroit Labs. After having gone through the apprentice program, and having two sons of my own, I realized that there are a lot of gaps in tech education, both through the school system and through learning opportunities for adults.

I’m starting the biweekly series, Bringing IT Home, for parents, guardians, teachers, and mentors, to assist us as adults to encourage our youth to investigate technology as a passion, and possibly a profession. This is important because STEM is the future. It’s way more than just working in labs or solving enormous equations. It includes engineering, healthcare, hardware and software development, design, and, most importantly, innovation.

We all know that innovation is the key to the future, but innovation is diversity. As we solve the world’s problems, it is vital that we have different minds from varied backgrounds coming together in the process. That’s why people get second opinions in the medical field. The more points of view, the more we are able to see. We have to do what we can to increase the diversity in our problem-solvers, especially since the problem may be how they care for us when we are old.

So…. How are we going to do this?

First of all, this is going to be a fun series! It’s going to be chock full of games, puzzles, exercises, and activities that you can do with the kids in your life. All of the videos will be STEM-focused fun.

One of the key things I learned about being a good software developer is that it takes way more than ability to write code. I will be sharing some other things as well that will strengthen our teamwork, personal development, and communication muscles.

We are in this together! Share with me anything that you are doing in your home or in your classrooms that you think would be great to share with the rest of the world!
